Report writing and clay volcanoes.
Some of the 3rd and 5th class children completed excellent report writing on volcanoes during their language classes. We discussed features of this type of writing and wrote individual reports. We used an encyclopaedia and information from the internet to help us. Did you know the largest volcano in the world is Mauna Loa in Hawaii?
We decided to use clay to create our own volcanoes which we painted and added an ash cloud to our volcanoes just like the Eyafjallajökull volcano in Iceland!
Marita Conlon McKenna’s Visit-May 2010
Marita Conlon McKenna came to visit our school on the 20th of May. We had invited her to open our new library. She also signed three of her books that we have in the library. The whole class read “Under the Hawthorn Tree” during the year. When we had finished reading it, we wrote poems, diary entries and letters. Charcoal images of the scenes from the story were created. We hope that you will enjoy reading them.

Dear Diary,
The day I got attacked by a big, dangerous dog was horrible. He was rounding me and my siblings, looking at us with his bloody red eyes. His ribs were sticking out. I panicked. I was very frightened so I screamed and pushed that skeletal creature away, but the beast stuck his huge, sharp, teeth right into my arm.
At that point, Eily also panicked and tried to defend me, but the ghostly dogs attacked my sister. Next thing I knew, my brave brother came barging in with a long, thick stick pushing the dogs away. One dog got hit, the second one got hit, the rest did not risk it. They just ran away.
I was exhausted lying down on the ground. That was the most painful and scary thing that has ever happened to me.!!!!
Love….

Dear Joseph,
I just thought I would write you this letter to fill you in about everything that’s happening over here.
Well I hope you are having a good time in Liverpool and I don’t even know how you got on that ship without getting caught.
It is very hard to get food over here as you know. And every single person that we see is like a zombie. I know that it sounds scary but I am not lying. Myself, Peggy and Eily are on our own now and while we were walking down the road we saw a lot of people picking baby turnips. Then a man came over to us and said the farmer had died that morning so it was alright if we took some. A while later, we went past a little river and while we were rummaging through the bushes we found a dead man’s body. Little Peggy nearly had a heart attack so Eily had to cover her eyes.
Well enough about me, hope to see you soon.
Yours truly,
Michael

Dear Prime Minister,
I was appalled by the scene I saw taking place at the harbour today. English men were shipping bags of grain from Ireland to England.
This is a disgrace. Your Government and people should be trying to save us, not kill more of our people. These crops have been grown in Ireland and looked after by Irish people. It is then sent to England, to feed English people when us Irish are dying of starvation.
Can you not see that this is wrong? Come see our people. They are so thin their skin barely covers their bones. They are eating mice, nettles, anything to try to ease the hunger pain that is constantly in their stomachs. There are people on the roads unable to take another step as they are so weak.
So please I beg of you don’t take our food. Help us instead. England has plenty of food, enough to spare. Don’t let any more Irish people die. Enough have died already.
Yours sincerely,
Chloe

Journey to the Workhouse
Ms. Kennedy lying on the ground,
Letting out a sobbing sound,
Her swollen belly,
She looks in pain.
I wonder if she still knows her name
We sneak softly in the bushes,
Seeing a pond with a lot of rushes
Hopefully they didn’t see us
Other people wouldn’t want to be us .
