PostHeaderIcon One Book One Community Opening Ceremony 2018

18th January 2018

One Book One Community 2018 began today with a wonderful Opening Ceremony at O’Connell’s Secondary School Hall. The children heard guest speaker TD Maureen O’Sullivan, who used to be a teacher, speak passionately about the initiative. They enjoyed music by musicians from Marino Secondary School and a bagpiper. They also heard excerpts from this year’s chosen book which is 19 Railway Street by Michael Scott and Morgan Llywelyn.

The One Book One Community initiative is a brilliant way to encourage children and their families to read and discuss a particular book and build excitement around it and enthusiasm for reading. 6th class and 1st year students from 18 different schools are participating this year and they all received a copy of the book in their goody bags today. At the end of the initiative (March 22nd) the children get to keep the book and it is hoped they will pass it on to someone at home to read and enjoy.

There will be plenty of fun activities based around the book as part of the project in the coming weeks. The children have already finished the bookmark competition. Our school’s winner was Xin Ru and the overall winner was Sabrina Yang from Central Model School. We will also be having an alternative book cover competition and a table quiz.

There are more copies of the book in the parents room if anyone would like to borrow it. Please return it afterwards so others can enjoy it too.
